Universal Design for Learning - UDL

This wiki has been created to demonstrate the UDL concept.  This is our attempt to provide ALL learners with flexible methods to present, express and provide them with options for engagement when learning and reading the novel, 'Holes' by Louis Sachar.

Universal Design for Learning has three main principles.  The principles are as follows:

Principle 1: To support recognition learning, provide multiple, flexible methods of presentation

Principle 2: To support strategic learning, provide multiple, flexible methods of expression and apprenticeship

Principle 3: To support affective learning, provide multiple, flexible options for engagement   (David H. Rose & Anne Meyer, ASCD, 2002)

For more information on UDL please visit the CAST website at www.cast.org/

The three UDL principles are summarized nicely on this graphic organizer, which will help you decide which teaching strategies to use in support of each principle.

Bloom's Taxonomy also proposed three main domains (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective) which exactly parallel the three UDL strategies/principles.  Andrew Churches has taken Bloom's Taxonomy into the digital age with Bloom's Digital Taxonomy Here you will see how digital activities match up with Bloom's thinking skills and find suggestions to support these three cognitive domains in your teaching.
