STANLEY'S LAMENT

I am loneliness

The dark of night is my cloak

I vacation in the arms of solitude

Sadness and depression are the cousins I would joyfully disinherit

At a welcoming smile.

Introduction

Although most of the novel takes place in the present there is a parallel story that occurs through flashbacks that happens in the past.  This story happened over a 100 years ago and is interwoven in the narrative of the story.   As you can see from the Wordle above there are many characters in the novel 'Holes'.  The central character is Stanley Yelnats.  He undergoes a major transformation in character from the beginning of the novel to the end.  Check out the activities below to learn about the various characters.

Activities

  1. The read.write.think site has a number of interactive online tools which can be used in a novel study.  Several teachers in the BC UDL project have reported success using the character trading cards tool.  Click on "visit this interactive tool" to get started.  UDL attempts to remove curriculum barriers by scaffolding learning.  This tool functions as an online graphic organizer for scaffolding writing about a character in a novel.  UDL also supports affective networks by providing multiple means of engagement, and the popular culture of trading cards is certainly engaging for some students.

     2.  The iwrite site presents step-by-step instructions which will guide a student through writing a character sketch.  Students can download various graphic organizers such as timelines and person/character charts to help them with the assignment. They can also download templates to help structure their writing and keep it neat and organized.

     3.  Did Hollywood get it right?  It would be interesting to discover whether the images of characters that students constructed while reading the book compared to the characters chosen for the movie.

     4.  SparkNotes gives a description of all the characters in the novel Holes.
