Websites

Below are a compilation of websites that will be useful to you and your students.  They range from single activities to full units.  A brief description of each website has been included.  They are as follows:

  1. This award-winning ThinkQuest project, The Hole Truth and Nothing But the Truth, was developed for kids by kids.  In addition to summary chapter questions, there are also cross-curricular math questions, recipes, fitness activites, and science activities on this site.
  2. Eduscapes has a great resource series called Literature Learning Ladders for studying novels that have won either the Newbery or Caldecott Medal.  Each Literature Ladder contains an extensive list of links based on themes, physical setting, and other aspects of that novel. The Literature Learning Ladder for Holes contains links about the author, bullying, the desert, homelessness, gypsies, buried treasure, Texas, the movie version, webquests, and other teacher resources.
  3. This WebEnglishTeacher site contains links to several unit and lesson plans for Holes.
  4. The Sparks Notes on Holes contain information on themes, characters, chapter summaries, review questions, a quiz, and other resources.
  5. Louis Sachar and Holes is a resource guide for teachers.  The site was created by three graduate students; Debra Johnson, Elissa Goldberg and Lorraine Savicki.  They create the website as part of a graduate course at Drexel University.  The activities are centered around the book, movie and the author.  There are a variety of activities that would engage all learners.  The site contains numerous links to unit and lessons plans for Holes.  The site is intended to be used with students aged 10-14.
  6. Here's an interesting math problem based on a scene from Holes.  "WhatCanYouDoWithThis" guru Dan Meyer blogs about how he introduced the problem using a video clip from Holes and used the students' questions to generate the math activity.

Wikis

What is a Wiki?

Wikipedia defines a 'wiki' as 'a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language.[1][2] Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. The collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia is one of the best-known wikis.[2] Wikis are used in business to provide intranet and Knowledge Management systems. Ward Cunningham, the developer of the first wiki software, WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as "the simplest online database that could possibly work".[3]

"Wiki" (/wiːkiː/) is a Hawaiian word for "fast".[4] "Wiki Wiki" is a reduplication. "Wiki" can be expanded as "What I Know Is", but this is a backronym.[5]'

Below are a compilation of Wikis that will be useful to you and your students.

  1. The Year 8 students at DIS in Dubai created a wiki about the novel Holes.  There is a page on inventions, an online multiple choice quiz, then and now, summary of the story and characters, etc.  It is a really good example of a teacher guided student created wiki.

Glogs

According to Wikipedia a glog is 'a poster produced on the Internet'.  To create your own glog click here.
